Course Aims and Objectives

The Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Occupational Health & Ergonomics (ACPOHE) is a special interest group of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy.  ACPOHE has been running courses for physiotherapists who have a specialist interst in the fields of occupational health and ergonomics for many years.  This one day manual handling course is suitable for all physiotherapists whether they have limited or a good amount of experience in manual handling.

After this course the participant should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of relevant Health & Safety legislation & regulations, relevant to manual handling
  2. Confidently apply the methods of assessing and controlling manual handling risk
  3. Critique the evidence base that surrounds manual handling training
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of the theoretical prinicples of effective manual handling
  5. Apply effective manual handling techniques to a variety of manual handling tasks
  6. Critique and suggest ways to improve other people's manual handling techniques
  7. Be competent to independently deliver manual handling training

Pre Course

Delegates should have a sound grasp of anatomy and physiology and a basic understanding of the Health and Safety at Work Act.

Participants must have a health background if they are not Chartered Physiotherapist eg nurse, occupational health advisor, sports therapist.

Personal Protective Equipment : It is advisable that delegates have appropriate safety footwear such as steel toecap shoes/boots.  If these are not worn, you will not be able to participate in all of the practical activities.


Tom Bivins is a Chartered Physiotherapist and has been working in the field of occupational health and ergonomics for 10 years.  He completed his undergraduate degree in Sports and Exercises Science in 2005, specialising in biomechanics and exercise physiology.  He has since completed an MSc in Physiotherapy, and is expected to have also completed an MSc in Ergonomics and Human Factors in April 2018.  Tom manages a service that delivers a wide range of interventions designed to prevent mental health problems and musculoskeletal disorders.  He also completes ergonomic consultancy across a range of industrial sectors.

COST: £ 150 for ACPOHE members, £210 for non ACPOHE members

Lunch is not included but tea and coffee will be provided throughout the course.
