Course Aims
This 3 day course aims to inform physiotherapists, who are starting work in an occupational setting or undertaking work for business and industry from their own private practices, of the key issues and best practice in Occupational Health. The course is accredited by the CSP.
Course Objectives
On completion of this module a student will be able to:
- Describe the roles of professionals who work in OH and the unique role of the physiotherapist in OH
- Discuss issues of confidentiality and consent related to occupational health physiotherapy practice with correct reference to underpinning legislation
- Describe the UK H&S Legislative system and give an overview of the legislation that is relevant to the provision of Occupational Physiotherapy services
- Critically analyse the work-relatedness of musculoskeletal disorders using epidemiological evidence
- Design a stepped care pathway for common conditions that is aligned to evidence based guidelines for low back pain and upper limb disorders
- Create a business case for OH physiotherapy to demonstrate service efficacy using 3 different methods: cost benefit, cost effectiveness and cost utility method
- Select and accurately use a range of clinical outcome measures in order to illustrate the clinical efficacy and health benefits of an OH service
- Design 3 return to work programmes with consideration given to temporary adjustments and grading and a provide a rationale for the nature of the recommended adjustments.

Presenters
Nicola Hunter is a director of a physiotherapy and a health and safety business. She is the founder of RehabWorks Ltd who deliver occupational physiotherapy services to business and industry across the UK
Amanda Jones is the head of the Staff Physiotherapy service at NHS Lothian. She has experience delivering a clinically and cost effective occupational health physiotherapy service in the NHS.
